Prisoners Political
Inspired by Killing Me Softly With His Song – Roberta Flack/The Fugees, Phantom of the Opera from the musical Phantom of the Opera, An Innocent Man – Billy Joel and Fergus Sings The Blues – Deacon Blue
Written by Steve Wallis, 22/3/2007
Dedicated to Joanne Simpson
Joanne Simpson, who this song is about and I wanted to be a member of my band, may not have been a political prisoner at all but an agent of big business who betrayed me. Maybe exposing her (as I did via a message on the internet) has shaken her out of her comfort zone and she may now be a very good person who can now play a very good role, including possibly as a member of the band. Time will tell...
I thought we had a good time
I sometimes made you smile
So why did you try to end it?
Did you love me all the while?
Was it voices broadcast into your head?
Is it due to them that you could be dead?
Was I killing you softly with my song?
Telling my love life with those words
Killing you softly with my song?
I could tell you’re a nice person, you are really kind
But the voices of big business are there inside your mind
They interfere with your memory
They made you say untrue things to me
They are not your fault
I’ll try to make them halt
You may lead the revolution with me
We can set the people free
Enough good people will know your role one day
And stop the broadcasts, make the voices go away
Of untrue things you’ve said I shouldn’t be too critical
There we were together, prisoners political
I a-a-a-a-am
An innocent man
You-ou-ou-ou-ou
Are innocent too
But you’ve had the blues
Why can’t this white man sing the blues?
Together we could change the world through song
We’ll try to right every wrong
By struggling for a world controlled by everyone!
I have recorded this song as a musical poem, now available as a Windows Media Audio (WMA) file or in MP3 format.
