On My Own

Inspired by The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face Roberta Flack (written by British folk singer Ewan MacColl for his wife Peggy Seeger), Earth Song Michael Jackson, Mad World Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules, On My Own from the musical Les Miserables

Written by Steve Wallis

Version 5, 25/5/2011

Dedicated to Priya Reddy (warcry) of War Cry Cinema

The first time ever I saw your face
You smiled at me and my heart began to race

We met because we put the earth first
Across the world, many are dying of hunger and thirst

The first time ever I’ll feel your kiss
It will be too good to miss

What about the killing fields?
Will there be a time
When people stop dying
Due to a war crime?

Did they ever stop to notice
All the blood they’ve shed before?
Did they ever stop to notice
All the innocents killed at war?

Look what theyve done to the world?
Look what theyve done
George Bush claims to be a Christian
But hed have killed Gods only son

I’m missing you more than words can say
But I know I’ll see you again one day

Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow
Will I see you tomorrow?
And I find it kind of funny
I find it very sad
That the sanest people in the world
Are those they smear as mad
It’s a very very mad world
Mad world

I didn’t mean to smear you
You emailed me to say it’s not true
That you had an ordeal like mine
Trying to prove you’re mentally fine

On my own, pretending youre beside me
Quite alone, trying to ensure the world will be free
In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
And although they sometimes say love is blind
I love you for your beauty as well as your mind

Without you, the world around me changes
And on my own, I have to face the dangers
I love you and every day I’m learning
I love others, but it’s for you I’m really yearning

I love you
I love you
I love you
Especially on my own

I have recorded this version of the song as a musical poem, in MP3 format, which has a music video on YouTube. Red Day performed an earlier version, with music but not performed or sung very well, also available in MP3 format (low quality and medium quality).
