Fast Car

Inspired by Fast Car Tracy Chapman

Written by Steve Wallis, 1/9/2007

Dedicated to the late Nathalie Monier

They had a fast car
They rented it from somewhere
Maybe MI5 had made a deal with them
So that they could hit someone
Someone who was wonderful

Starting from zero they had nothing to lose
Maybe they’d do something
They themselves, they had a lot to prove

They had a fast car
They had a plan to take Nathalie’s soul away
Been selling drugs in Moss Side
Managed to save quite a lot of money

Didn’t have to drive too far
Just cross the road and into the socialists
Both men may have had MI5 jobs
And Nathalie knew what it meant to by dying

You see, those two men had a problem
Maybe they had a drug addiction
That’s the way it was
Nathalie’s body was too hurt for living

I say her body was too young to die like this
Her soul went off and left me
She wanted more from life than Stuart could give
I think now God’s taking care of her
Since she quit life and went to heaven

They had a fast car
And it was fast enough to take Nathalie away
They had made a decision
To kill Nathalie that night
And she died that way

CHORUS:
So remember when they were driving
Driving in their car
Speed so fast it felt like they were drunk
Traffic lights lay ahead of them
And Stuart’s arm was wrapped around her shoulder
And I, I, I had a feeling that I loved her
I, I, I had a feeling that I loved someone, loved someone, loved someone

They had a fast car
And they mowed down those two bodies
Maybe they stopped drug dealing
And now work in the city as MI5 agents

For them things may have got better
They work for the state and may have got promoted
Maybe they moved out of Moss Side
Bought a bigger house and lived in the suburbs

CHORUS

Yes, I loved Nathalie

This song is based on Tracy Chapman’s song of the same name that I loathe because it reminds me of the assassination of someone I was in love with (Nathalie Monier). Note that my understanding that she was killed by two black drug dealers in Moss Side, reflected in this song that I wrote to mark the tenth anniversary of her death, was disinformation, probably by infiltrators on the side of big business to try to increase racism within the Socialist Party. They did not succeed, but the party now has an even smaller proportion of black or Asian members than it did at the time. I later discovered, from newspaper reports on the internet, that the two assassins were from leafy suburbs of Manchester, one of whom had a German surname (Schultz).

I have recorded the song as a musical poem, in MP3 format.
