Donovan’s Doorway

Inspired by Donovan’s Doorway Latin Quarter

Written by Steve Wallis, October 2008

Dedicated to Gayle O’Donovan (Secretary of Manchester Green Party and Green Party prospective parliamentary candidate for Manchester Central, plus local election candidate for Hulme in 2010)

There was a lost soul singing at a swimming pool
Tap, tap, tapping and played the fool
He can’t keep the beat to the old sheet music
And people don’t think he’s cool

But in Donovan’s Doorway, there’s a woman with a great smile
Who may keep him from playing the fool
Yes, in Donovan’s Doorway, there’s a woman with a great smile
Who doesn’t believe in following the rules

In love he’s falling and he has great height
A campaign is calling; he can’t ignore their plight
Against deportations, he does fight
And he is attempting to unite black and white

And in Donovan’s Doorway, there’s a woman with a great smile
Who is also struggling against the far right
Yes, in Donovan’s Doorway, there’s a woman with a great smile
And it may have been love at first sight

And he said goodbye; yes, he said good night
Will he see her again when it is light?
Asking him out for a pint was a lovely suggestion
The odds are no longer against them making much progress
But the course of his lonely heart is in question

They are striving to stop a third world war
More than with others, with her he wants to score
Two hearts entwined; people who are kind
And are striving to help the poor

And in Donovan’s Doorway, there’s a woman with a great smile
She wondered what he’s looking for
Yes, in Donovan’s Doorway, there’s a woman with a great smile
And they may end up defying the law

The second incarnation of the band Galaxia recorded the song at the Cutting Rooms recording studio in Manchester in October 2008. The recording can be downloaded in MP3 format.
