The Colourscheme

Inspired by The Colourscheme Latin Quarter (on the album Radio Africa), DominionLatin Quarter (on the album Swimming Against The Stream), The World Is Planned Galaxia and Love Shine A Light Katrina and the Waves (on the album Walk On Water)

Written by Steve Wallis, 2/8/2007

Canine, feline, amphibian
They suffer mans dominion
Raptor, equine, simian
They suffer man’s dominion

I’ve worked out a formula
For all good people to take
They sometimes say I’m crazy
I sometimes need to take a break

CHORUS:
Oh, the colourscheme
We’ve got something to lose
So much to choose
There’
s the angry reds and blacks and the nasty blues

And there’s the colour purple
Royal purple
Like Ségolène and Ken Livingstone
And that of a Whoopi Goldberg cushion

CHORUS

We need guidance from above and below
Maybe from God or a UFO
And from angels on the earth

CHORUS

When the Zapatistas launched an uprising in Mexico
Aliens really wanted to know
And many spotted a UFO
The Mexican dictatorship suffered a big blow

CHORUS

I’ve worked out a formula
For all good beings to take
I’ve taken inspiration from the Buddha
Was Zen an alien or a robot?
Muslims believe Jesus was great
So expose those who spread messages of hate
Whether they are politicians, fascists
Or religious fundamentalists
If good Muslims, Christians and Jews
Unite with other good people, we can’t lose

Especially if we understand the colourscheme
We’ve got so much to lose
I’ve worked out how to choose
Between the angry reds and blacks and the nasty blues
To let love shine a light
Around every country in the world
Across every border
To create a good New World Order!

We have not yet recorded this song, which I regard as one of the favourite songs I have written, due to its combination of politics, religion, science fiction, love and humour. It should have a great tune and vocals too, like the Latin Quarter song of the same name on which it is loosely based – which is perhaps my favourite song written and performed by any other artists (although this depends on the mood that I am in at the time).

It is appropriate that I have included lyrics from my favourite band of all time, Katrina and the Waves – which sounds naff from someone as political as me, because they mainly concentrated on love songs (and are most well known for Walking On Sunshine) but also did some very political songs including Going Down to Liverpool (later recorded by the Bangles as their first single), Machine Gun Smith, Psalm 23, Walking Where The Roses Grow, The Beauty Myth and Legalise Marijuana). The one used in this song, Love Shine A Light, won the Eurovision Song Contest by the largest amount ever (by a long way), due to it being an anti-war and anti-racist song about love across and within the borders of the world.

The fact that I have chatted many more particularly important women in my life up to Katrina and the Waves songs than to those of other artists is also a factor in my choice. A good balance between politics and love, as I have in my life, is vital. It is worth pointing out, however, that my first girlfriend Debbie Peters got orgasms both times she listened to the song Excitable by the all-female reggae band Amazulu on a compilation tape I made on a portable tape player. It was a song I really loved already, and I think that it is my favourite romantic song of all time. Giving Debbie orgasms without having sex was a particularly important event for me since I am still a virgin. However, I put the interests of the world above the interests of individual happiness, so The Colourscheme means much more to me than Excitable.
