99 Blue Balloons
Inspired by 99 Red Balloons – Nena, The Revolution Could Have Started Then! – Red Day/Galaxia, It’s The End Of The World As We Know It – REM and Colourblind – Darius
Written by Steve Wallis, 2/7/2007
Dedicated to Derren Brown, Martine McCutcheon, Cath Bann and Priya Reddy (warcry) of War Cry Cinema
Derren and Martina in a little toy shop
Bought a bag of balloons with the money they’d got
Set them free as he controlled our minds
’Til one by one, they were gone
Back at the base, he’d put bugs in the software
To flash the message “Daleks are out there”
And floating in the summer sky
99 blue balloons went by
Suddenly a chant was heard all around the world:
Infiltration, assassinations and mind control
And not just the odd MI5 or CIA mole
Have so far stopped the revolution
But it is the only solution
Panic bells, it was red alert, there was nothing left but suicide
The war machine sprung to life
Humans they wanted to sacrifice
99 excuses made, a button pressed by John Reid
Happy slappy, he’d kill a baby in a nappy
He called the troops out in a hurry
This is what he’d been waiting for
The Master told him, “It’s time for war”
The Doctor was in a cell as 99 blue balloons went by
99 knights of the realm rode super hi-tech jet fighters
Every one was an anti-hero, every one was a Cyberman
With orders to exterminate, then laugh and commiserate
They shot at nuclear power stations
Mushroom clouds in many nations
It was the end of the world as we knew it
And Derren felt fine
99 blue balloons went by
Or did they?
Derren was colourblind
98 turquoise balloons went by
In every one, the soul of someone green
Not just Shrek and the Incredible Hulk
But environmentalists like Cath and Priya
Sandi Thom, Michael Jackson and Green Day
Freedom fighters like the Bona Fide Project
Doctor and the Medics, and obviously the nurses
But whose soul was in the red balloon?
Martina!
So is Master Derren now dead?
No, he became reincarnated as a Sea Devil on the lost planet Gallifrey!
To be continued...
I have recorded the song as a musical poem, in MP3 format.
